Once your strategic plan is in place you a business development operational plan has to be written. This gets more granular around the goals and priorities of the business development effort. Timescale should be no longer than 12 months. Ideally the information should fit within a single page. Taking the company-wide strategy and applying it to the particular markets within your sphere of responsibility.
At a minimum, it should detail revenue targets, quoting targets, key industries, and actions. Details of a measurable KPI should accompany each action.
Business Development Plan Framework
A model framework is presented below to be adapted for your particular circumstances.
- Mission—adapts the company mission to apply to your region and areas of responsibility.
- Targets—details the targets for revenue, volume of quoting, and number of business development meetings and calls.
- Customer Experience—defines how you want the customer to engage with and experience your offering. This shapes both how you approach customers and your internal delivery teams.
- Marketing—highlights those marketing tools planned for the coming year. Details social media plans, specific events, and launches, etc.
- Existing Market Segments—details the key goals, targets, and actions for this segment of your customer base.
- New market segments—longer-term goals and actions that are unlikely to yield immediate results but tie in with the growth aspirations of the company.
- Projects—defines projects specific to your team for the coming year. Includes development of the company website, marketing materials, or project references.
- Collaboration—features internal stakeholder alliances to enable smooth collaboration in any joint actions needed.
Example Plan
Google holds many examples of sales strategies. A simple search will give you plenty of choice. However, I developed an example intended to be simple and succinct (see below). Capturing enough detail to be relevant, it defines the priorities clearly. Adapt this to your own specific set of circumstances.
Remember to make all KPIs SMART. Specific, Measurable, Attainable, Relevant, and Time-Bound.
